WebCT Bulletin Board Overview

Overview

The Bulletin Board provides three main functions: the ability to post, read, and search for bulletin board messages. The Bulletin Board is an important information source because it stores messages from you (the instructor), as well as the questions, answers, and comments of students in the current course session. It is richer than a regular newsgroup because students may post questions directly from the on-line notes regarding specific page topics. As well, the Bulletin Board enables users to extract articles in a number of ways to cater to their current information requirements.

The Bulletin Board is divided into different forums, which allow you to create discussion groups around particular subjects.

Forums can be of two types: public and private. All students have access to public forums, while private forums are available only to the subset of students that you choose. For example, private forums can be used when the class is divided into presentation groups. You can assign a private forum to each group to allow group members to discuss their project or exchange ideas in their exclusive area.

By default, the Bulletin Board contains 3 public forums:

  • All: Lists all messages in all forums
  • Main: The main forum for general discussion
  • Notes: Messages which refer to a page of notes in the course

You may add forums for such topics as assignments and labs.

The Bulletin Board can be accessed by clicking the Bulletin Board icon on the Homepage or on the Button Bar on a particular page of notes. In the default setting, the window is divided into three frames: the left frame contains the Bulletin Board functions and options, while the right frames display the articles and listing screens. You can also choose a no frames or full screen frames option. See Configuration Options for more information
