Content Compiler - Overview

Overview of Content Compiler

The Content Compiler feature of WebCT allows your students to create a mini-book of course pages, the contents of which they select from the available course notes you have created. This collection of course notes can then be printed, or viewed online.

To add a link to the Content Compiler tool to your student view homepage press the following buttons. Click Organize Icons then Add then WebCT Tool. This will display the Add Link to WebCT Tool page (see Figure 1 below).

Now select the radio button beneath the Compile icon (see Figure 2 below).

Type a name for the tool's hyperlink, such as "compile notes," in the Title text entry box. This hyperlinked title will appear beneath the Compile icon on your student homepage. Now click Add.

In order to see the student view of the Compile Content Tool, sign in to your course as a student and click the Compile Notes link you have just created. If you have more than one path of notes in your course, you and your students will be presented with a screen similar to the one shown in Figure 3 below.

Figure 3  Choosing a path with the Content Compiler

Select the radio button to the left of the course content path from which you wish to compile notes. Click Continue to display the Content Compiler screen for the path you have selected. A screen will appear that is similar to the one shown in Figure 4 below.

Note: You can only compile content that exists on a WebCT path. You cannot compile single pages of content created with the Single Page feature on the Add toolbar.

Figure 4  Compiling course notes

Using the options displayed above in Figure 4, students can select clusters of course pages by clicking the check boxes to the left of the pages they wish to compile. Clicking Continue compiles the selected notes and displays them in a new window. This tool provides students with an easy way to view or print pages that are not concurrent. Clicking Content Compiler - Mark All selects all the course pages, allowing students either to print all the notes on a path, or scroll through them. If a student wants only to view compiled pages, the Mark All feature eliminates the need to use the Page Forward and Page Backward commands on the button bar.
