Overview The Chat tool allows you to have real-time conversations with other users of your course. It can be used for online, interactive sessions such as tutorials or discussions. There are 4 general-purpose rooms, one general forum for the course and one for all courses. Look at Figure 1 for an example of the opening Chat screen. ![]() Figure 1 Chat screen To enter a room, simply click on it. This will bring up the Chat applet window (Figure 2): ![]() Figure 2 Chat applet window The large text area or Conversation Text Box displays all messages sent and received. The Room Occupants list shows who is in the room at the present time. If you want to be notified when new users enter a chat room, click the Entry Chime check box. The chime will sound whether you are in Chat or are working elsewhere in WebCT. To send a message, type in the text box underneath the Type your message below and press [ENTER]: label and press Enter. Press Quit to close the chat applet. You can also send private messages to selected users by clicking on their names: ![]() Figure 3 Sending a private message through Chat In this case the "Instructor" would not have seen the messages just sent between "Paul" and "Shayna". In addition to the main chat screen and the chat applet window the lower frame displays the Chat toolbar: Figure 4 Chat toolbar Click on any of the links below for an explanation of that designer option: |
