Calendar - Import Events

Overview of Import Events

This option allows you to add multiple events to the calendar at one time. You can do this by importing a comma-delimited text file containing the calendar events. We recommend that you start with a template text file, obtained by using the Compile option of the Calendar tool. To use it create the file and download it.

The text file describing the calendar events is structured such that each event description begins with a colon. The event descriptions have the following structure.

:date,summary,URL, ,start time(hh:mm),end time(hh:mm),detail

Only the date and summary fields are required. If the other fields are blank, the descriptions simply have no space between the commas. The detail section can contain multiple lines.

Note: The extra field between the URL and start time is required for internal links. However, this field is very complicated, and should be left blank when importing calendar information.

Here are a few sample entries:

  • To use the Import feature of the Calendar, click Import in the Calendar toolbar. The following screen will be displayed in the top frame.

  • Click Cancel to return to the calendar for the current month without making any changes.

  • Enter the file path of the text file on your course, or choose Browse... to open up the WebCT Browser, to select the file. You must choose a file from your Course Files on the server. If the file you want to use is on your own computer, you must first upload it to the server. Uploading can be done with the File Manager

Once the file has been selected, choose Continue to proceed with the import. A confirmation screen will be displayed in the upper frame, summarizing the events that will be added:

Figure 2   Confirmation of Calendar Import screen Choose Continue only if the summarized events look correct. If the events described by the confirmation screen do not look like the events you were expecting in the imported file, either the wrong file was chosen, or the file does not have the correct structure. Press Cancel to exit the confirmation screen and return to the current calendar month without making any changes.

The events described by the imported file will be added to the Calendar and the display in the top frame will return to the main calendar view.

  • Importing calendar events is a great way to copy calendar events between different courses. Just compile and download events from one course, and import them into another course's calendar.
