Software
eDrawings Viewer
Convenient
tool for viewing Solidworks files when you don't own a Solidworks license.
Downloading the program is free.
MathPlayer - Mathematica
You
can use MathPlayer to view Mathematica Notebooks if you don't own a copy of
Mathematica. For students at St. Thomas - you can check out a copy
Mathematica at the OSF library desk. It can sometimes be a pain to use,
but trust me, it can be a very helpful tool, especially because we don't have
access to Matlab outside of the school's computers.
Free AutoCAD
Yes,
you heard me right, you can get AutoCAD for free and legally for that matter. Students and
faculty can download it for free at the site below, after registering. You
must have a university email address.
Free CAD Software
Various
CAD freeware - don't know the quality - I personally just work at the school lab
stations for CAD modeling stuff, but it may be interesting to play around with
different software.
Engineering References
UST Engineering Databases
For research or paper writing, a good place to start is St. Thomas's library
website. Allows free access to several journal databases.
The Internet Public Library
Contains links that may be helpful for a research project. Includes a
large range of topics, including several different branches of engineering.
HowStuffWorks
A site that can give you a quick overview of a huge variety of topics and assist
you at learning 'how stuff works'.
Engineering Conversion Factors
A list of common conversion factors between units. Its tough to remember
each unit conversion; this may be of help.
Mathematics
Math.com
A site that contains various mathematics reference tables and a review of basic
math including algebra, trigonometry, and statistics.
Wolfram MathWorld
A decent reference on advanced mathematical concepts. Yep, by the makers
of Mathematica, so they should know what they are doing.
Physics
The Vega Science Trust - Feynman Lectures
If
you haven't ever heard of Feynman, you really should check him out. He is
Nobel Prize-winner, fantastic lecturer, and one interesting personality. I
would recommend the book Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!, as well.
Chemistry
The Lab Rat
Contains
a variety of reference tables including the periodic table and a table of
physical constants. You may want to forget chemistry, but don't! Its
important!
Writing
Guide to Technical Writing
Not a site but a document to guide your technical reports.
Sanity
Sluggy Freelance
One
of my favorite web comic series. Hilarious and applicable to engineers. It
is updated daily except for the weekends.
Angry Alien Productions
Thirty
second movie summaries reenacted by bunnies - what more can I say?
Includes the classics as well as some new releases.
Gizmodo
Gadget
blog that keeps up on the latest technology and toys. I bit too iphone
focused sometimes, but this comes from someone unwilling to cough up the dough.
Slashdot
Technology news submitted by users. Sometimes has some very interesting
stuff. Most topics are computer focused/orientated.
